KLM Massage and Osteopathy: Precision Therapy, Targeting Pain – Solutions for Lasting Relief
Manual Osteopathic Therapy is an investigative assessment and treatment of the body as a
whole unit from conception to the present. It focuses on the interrelationship between the
structure and function of the body. The goal is to work toward total body health through
treating musculoskeletal framework, which includes the joints, muscles, and spine. We aim to
positively affect the body’s nervous, circulatory, and lymphatic systems. Using a subtle, hands-
on technique called palpation, Manual Osteopathy helps restore function in the body by
treating the causes of pain and imbalance. Ie: Shoulder pain may be related to a dysfunctional
gull bladder or cranial sacral treatment may be needed to alleviate hip pain. It is our job to find
the source of the dysfunction not just follow where the pain is occurring. We are asymmetry
analysists per say. Andrew Taylor Still suggests that we use anatomy, physiology and our hands
to treat muscles, fluid flow, fascia, joints and viscera.
In massage therapy, a massage therapist rubs and kneadthe soft tissues of your body.
The soft tissues include muscle, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and skin. The
massage therapist varies the amount of pressure and movement.
Massage is part of integrative medicine. Medical centers often offer it with standard
treatment. It can be used for a wide range of medical conditions.
Studies of massage benefits have found massage can:
Help reduce stress.
Lessen pain and muscle tightness.
Increase relaxation.
Improve the work of the immune system.
At Mayo Clinic, medical providers may recommend massage therapy to help people
cope with the pain and stress of conditions such as cancer, heart disease, stomach
problems or fibromyalgia.

concern are addressed. This can take between 10-20 minutes depending on your health
history. Once all information is gathered, the assessment will take place which will help to
identify areas of dysfunction. Once these areas are indicated for treatment they will be treated
with consent with the specific treatment. This may or may not be done at each appointment if
your dysfunction is still existing. There may be additional assessments at follow up
appointments to narrow down where your dysfunction is coming from.
Treatment modalities can include but are not limited to:
Articulative techniques: this includes mild corrections to the alignment of your
musculoskeletal framework using muscle energy to lever joints into correct alignment.
Fascial techniques: this includes mild palpative pressures to unwind fascial chains in a
dysfunctional area.
Cranialsacral techniques: this include mild palpation of fluid flow and the release of
cranial bones into correct alignment.
Lymphatic techniques: this treatment is for clients whom have been ill have some
manageable edema I.e. travelers. If you have pitted edema or removed lymph nodes you will
not be able to have your lymphatic system treated.
Visceral Manipulation: this treats the organs of the gut which can influence your overall
health. This treatment is good for everyone.
Similar to other modalities of treatment, this depends on a few things i.e.) How long have you
been suffering from your ailment, age, mental state, your overall health, etc. This means it can
range form 2 treatments to an ongoing maintenance over a period of time.

Does Manual Osteopathic Therapy hurt?
Manual osteopathic treatments are not typically painful. Most techniques are extremely gentle.
However, depending on the condition we’re treating, some discomfort can’t be avoided. In
devising the treatment plan, the practitioner will look at the condition, symptoms, and the
client’s general health and concerns. We won’t perform a procedure unless consent is given to
proceed, and just like in massage therapy, you can let us know at any time if you’re
uncomfortable or would like to stop or change the treatment.
What other modalities compare to Manual Osteopathic Therapy?
Manual Osteopathic therapy has many components to it that compare to many modalities, can
be described as a combination therapy that includes massage, physio and gentle chiropractic
techniques as well as some energy techniques.
The main difference is that osteopaths tend to use more rhythmical and gentle techniques
while chiropractors use stronger, high velocity manipulative techniques and focus mostly on
joint alignment. Chiropractors may also use modalities such as ultrasound and various
electrotherapies for pain relief while osteopaths generally rely on hands-on

to relieve pain. Massage therapy typically will alleviate pain by releasing muscle tissue around
the area of concern which is typically muscular. Essentially, these offer valuable and useful
services, and each can be included in a holistic healthcare regimen.
